Request and approve absences in Slack

Use the flair app in Slack to view upcoming absences, request time off, or make an approval decision. Absence data stays synchronized with the Employee Hub.

Who can use this?

Employees and absence approvers in Slack. Your organization must install and enable the flair Slack app.

Before you begin

  • In Slack, open Apps, and search for flair.
  • If flair is unavailable, install it from the Slack App Directory, or ask a Slack administrator to install it.

View absences in Slack

  • In the flair Slack app, open Home to see your upcoming absences and absent colleagues.

Request an absence in Slack

  1. In the flair Slack app, click Request Absence.
  2. Select the absence type.
  3. Select the start and end dates.
  4. For a half day, select Start Period or End Period.
  5. Optional: Enter a comment for the approver.
  6. Click Submit. The request synchronizes with the Employee Hub.

Approve an absence in Slack

  • From the flair Slack notification, approve or decline the absence. The decision synchronizes with the Employee Hub.

Update your Slack status during absences

flair can set your Slack status automatically while you're on an approved absence. The status shows the absence category name with a matching emoji and clears when the absence ends.

This setting requires two connections. Your organization must have connected its Slack workspace to flair, and your own Slack user must be connected to your Employee Hub account.

Connect your Slack user

  1. In Slack, open the flair app.
  2. On the Home tab, click Connect. The Employee Hub opens on the Slack connection page and confirms the connection.

Turn on automatic status updates

  1. In the Employee Hub, go to Settings → Notification Settings.
  2. Turn on Automatically update Slack status during planned absences.
  3. If flair isn't authorized to change your Slack status yet, Slack asks you to allow it. Confirm the authorization. You return to Notification Settings with the setting turned on.

If your organization hasn't connected Slack, the card shows that Slack isn't enabled for your organization. If your Slack user isn't connected, the card asks you to click Connect in the flair app in Slack first.
